Erich Hoyt is WDC Senior Research Fellow and leads its Global Marine Protected Areas and Critical Habitat Programme. He is the author of more than 600 articles, papers and reports and 20 books including Marine Protected Areas for Whales, Dolphins and Porpoises (a WDC book published by Earthscan/ Taylor & Francis, London & NY, 2011) which has been reviewed as the bible for marine mammal habitat protection. He first started studying killer whales in 1973, work that led to his first book, the classic Orca: The Whale Called Killer. He currently co-directs the Far East Russia Orca Project and the Russian Cetacean Habitat Project which are supported partly by WDC. Based in the UK, he is committed to achieving a future for whales, dolphins and porpoises in which their critical habitat or homes will be protected in the waters of coastal countries and on the high seas of the world ocean.
