WDC travel insurance partner joins our fight against captivity

Alpha have agreed that as of today, in line with WDC’s policy against swimming with whales and dolphins, they have removed ‘swim with’ experiences from their policies and activity packs, to show that they do not support or endorse the activity.

Many people love the idea of swimming with wild dolphins, which is somewhat seen as an activity to ‘tick off the bucket list’, however it can be very intrusive and stressful for the dolphins involved.  In some locations, dolphins are repeatedly disturbed by boats dropping swimmers in the water next to them and it has been documented that dolphins sometimes end up leaving their usual homes in search of quieter areas. Disruption to feeding, resting, nursing and other behaviour may have a long-term impact on the health and wellbeing of individual dolphins and populations, and there is a risk of dolphins becoming injured by a boat’s propellers or even becoming dependant on humans for food.

“Here at Alpha we don’t just stick to insurance; we’re passionate about the tourism industry we’re part of and want to give back! The support of sustainable tourism is a key focus for us as and we believe a massive part of that is marine tourism. This is why we’ve teamed up with WDC to support their amazing work for whales and dolphins across the globe. Together, we hope to raise awareness of the attractions and activities that are sustainable and responsible options for tourists and put an end to the cruel and outdated practices elsewhere.” – Sophie Phillips, Alpha Travel Insurance

WDC are thrilled that Alpha have chosen to make such a positive change, and we hope this will inspire other members of the travel industry to act against activities which can harm whales and dolphins and other marine life.
