Barcelona to be a dolphinaria free zone

Authorities in Barcelona, Spain have announced that the city is to become a dolphinaria-free city.

Dolphins have been held in captivity for ‘entertainment’ in city facilities for 45 years, but the new announcement bans the building of any new dolphinaria and new homes will be sought for the six dolphins currently held (four in Barcelona zoo and two on loan to Oceanografic in Valencia).

Although the dolphins can be seen by members of the public, the shows have already ceased in Barcelona. It is now hoped that the remaining dolphins can possibly live out the rest of their lives in a wild sea sanctuary.
