Education with a Porpoise #5 – An Education Blog Series
WDC is an international leader in educating and exciting people of all ages about whales and dolphins, and this summer we were the proud recipients of the ASCOBANS Outreach and Education Award. With offices in five different countries and a visitor centre in Scotland, we reach a wide audience and carry out many different education initiatives. This is the 5th blog in our Education Blog Series ‘Education with a Porpoise!’ – read on to learn more from Ali at WDC’s office in England.
WDC’s goal is simple; it is to spread the word about how incredible whales and dolphins are, and inspire people to protect them. People who are passionate about whales and dolphins will want to help protect them and the places they call home.
We want to connect people with whales and dolphins and encourage a life-long passion for marine environmental issues.
Whales and dolphins are easy to love; they are so engaging and are blessed with the WOW factor. They are intelligent, highly social, long-lived, and family orientated. They care for one another, are superbly adapted to life in seas and rivers, they hold many world records and live peacefully together in communities and societies.
WDC New Schools Project for England and Wales
WDC has recently been awarded a grant from the Ernest Cook Trust for developing our outreach work with school children in England and Wales, creating a number of new hands-on, curriculum-linked educational activities for children and working with teachers and schools in Wiltshire and South Wales to trial these new resources.
Our goals are to inform, educate and inspire children about the whales and dolphins living on our doorsteps and how and why they need protecting. The workshops will use fun activities to teach children about whales and dolphins, the fascinating science behind their lives, and how they help keep ocean ecosystems balanced. Children will learn how human actions affect whales and dolphins and simple steps they can take to help protect them and the marine environment.
