WDC carries out southern right whale study in Argentina
In October, WDC and colleagues from Fundación Cethus conducted the second fieldwork season on Southern right whales in Miramar city, Buenos Aires, Argentina. The aim of the study is to determine seasonality and habitat use of the species in the area.
Even though most of the time weather conditions were not suitable for visual surveys, we were able to sight Southern right whales on several occasions, including a mother with her calf. We also conducted an aerial survey with the support of the Prefectura Naval Argentina (Argentinian Coast Guard) during which we sighted one individual. The aim of this survey was to photo-identify whales in the area.
In addition to the research activities, social outreach was achieved through lectures offered in three schools of the city to approximately 250 students between 6 and 15 years.
We would like to thank the Prefectura Naval Argentina, Perata Property Company, Playa Club building consortium, Iñíguez family, Municipality of General Alvarado and Tourism Director, Carlos Pagliardini for their support during fieldwork.
