Belugas whales spotted 500 miles from the sea

Belugas spotted up Yukon River

A small pod of beluga whales has been spotted by a group of people heading up the Yukon River, about 550 miles from the mouth of the Yukon River and the Bering Sea. It is thought that the whales were following groups of salmon up the river and they will return once the food runs out!
One of the party, Clifford Cleaver said that they spotted at least four belugas and began taking pictures because he thought no one would believe him.

Beluga whales have been exploited over past decades, hunted for food and captured for display. The bright white skin makes the whales easy to see, but it also allows it to blend in with floating ice or whitecaps. Although they are not born white, their unique colour makes it hard for them to be confused with other whale species.
