Miami Seaquarium to end trainer rides on Lolita
Following a federal safety investigation by US authorities, Miami Seaquarium has announced that it will no longer allow its trainers to perform rides on the captive orca, Lolita.
The investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) examined how the Seaquarium’s trainers work with Lolita, who has been held captive for 44 years.
Lolita was taken from her family, part of the Southern Resident population of orcas that live off Washington State, during the infamous Penn Cove captures in 1970. Along with the rest of the population, she was recently classified as endangered.
