After the success of the Wild Dolphins art trail on the streets of Aberdeen last year, WDC’s Scottish Dolphin Centre is delighted to announce a final addition to the Wild Dolphin trail family, and is asking members of the public to suggest a name for the new mystery creature when the centre opens this week.
The trail was hailed a spectacular success, with thousands of people visiting the painted dolphin sculptures that were situated around the city (and beyond) during the summer months. The dolphins were then auctioned off in September, raising half a million pounds for both charities behind the event – Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC) and children’s hospital charity, ARCHIE Foundation.
The 52nd and final dolphin, designed by local artist and WDC volunteer Ishy Walters, is to be located within the grounds of the Scottish Dolphin Centre at Spey Bay, will be offically unveiled as the centre re-opens 7 days a week for the new season from 28th March 2015.
Over the Easter holidays the Scottish Dolphin Centre will be inviting the public to submit suggestions for a name for the new addition, with the new name being selected from entries and announced at the end of the holidays.
Kate Hannigan, The Scottish Dolphin Centre co-ordinator said: ‘We decided that choosing a name for our new dolphin would be a great way to start the season here this year. We welcome suggestions from all of our visitors to the Scottish Dolphin Centre and also any entries that come to us from those who are on Facebook but don’t have the chance to get to the centre to visit us during Easter.’
There will be lots of other events and activities happening over the Easter holidays to keep all ages entertained. Children can take part in our kids club, ‘Wildlife Warriors’ and discover the amazing wildlife of Spey Bay. On Wednesday, 1st April, the kids can take part in ‘Awesome Anatomy’ and learn how dolphin’s body’s work and the similarities they have to ours.
Visitors can also join in with the regular daily programme at the Centre, including hourly land based dolphin watching, tours around the UK’s largest Icehouse, guided walks on the reserve and a friendly new team of fantastic seasonal guides.
The WDC Scottish Dolphin Centre is open 7 days a week (10.30 to 5pm) from 28th March until 1st November, and entry is free.
