Illegal fishing net kills porpoise off the west coast of Scotland

Police in Scotland are investigating the death of a porpoise killed in an illegally set net off the Isle of Lewis.

The huge 125 metre long gill net was reported by a member of the public and, when lifted, was found to contain an entangled porpoise.

Police are urging anyone with any information about this crime, to get in touch.  Scotland Wildlife Crime Officer, Adrian Kay, based in Benbecula, said: “It is clear that this porpoise, an intelligent animal, would have suffered a slow, painful death caught in this net.”

These illegal salmon poaching nets are a real threat to dolphins and porpoises that feed in the same areas.
