The battle goes on…
Morgan is the young wild orca who was found off the coast of the Netherlands in 2010 and taken into captivity. Last November, instead of being freed as many people had hoped, she was moved from a small tank in the Netherlands to another tank in the Canary Islands.
In just over a week’s time, on 1st November, a group of Morgan supporters go to court to argue that she should never have been flown to the Canaries, and should be given the chance of freedom.
Video footage of her first few weeks in the Canaries show her being rammed and bitten by the other orcas and she now has ‘rake marks’ all along her body because of this. She was also spending a lot of time alone in a shallow side pool.
It could have been all so different. November is the time that researchers and visitors start to see large groups of orcas coming in close to shore to the islands and fjords of Northern Norway where Morgan’s extended family live. In this beautiful, icy wilderness the orcas spend the winter months feeding on herring and socialising with all the other pods. Morgan should be there but, instead, is far away from home with animals that are strangers and aggressive towards her.
