Norway Kills First Whales Of The Season
Following the news of Icelandic whalers taking their first minke whales of the hunting season, reports have come in stating that Norwegian whale hunters have killed their first whales of the year one month into the hunt ‘season’.
Norway’s whale hunting season started on April 1 and finishes at the end of August, but the main reason given for whales not being killed up to this point has been the poor weather.
Despite whaling being on the decline in Norway and its fleet shrinking in size, the country has set the same quota of 1,286 minke whales for slaughter this year as it did last year. 533 whales were killed in 2011.
Norway, Iceland and Japan are the only countries who break the international moratorium on commercial whaling.
